ModakBoard™ - for 100% Fire Resistant floors, ceilings, walls and external linings.
In Australia, we are well aware of the threat of bush fire. Recently
this has been highlighted with the tragic events in Victoria and has
become a major issue for home owners in high fire risk areas. In a
public interview in February 2009, Dr Kevin Tolhurst, senior lecturer
at the University of Melbourne and eminent authority in Fire Ecology,
stated that during the 2009 Victorian bush fires "the heat intensity
would have reached 1200°C".
Pine ignites at between 220°C and 280°C and steel starts to lose
it's integrity at around 400-500°C. Mortar can explode and bricks can
collapse at high temperature. These are all worth thinking about when
you are building your new home.
Modak homes are built on a steel frame, have timber appearance, panelled or painted steel doors, steel door frames and thermal aluminium framed double-glazed windows. ModakBoard is used for all external and
internal walls, ceilings, floors and decking in Modak homes. No timber
is used in the construction of a
Modak home.
How is ModakBoard different?
- ModakBoard has been tested to 1200°C with no combustion or flame out.
- ModakBoard does not absorb water and so superheated steam will not
"blow out" the product as it may do with standard building bricks.
- ModakBoard is totally fire resistant. It will not burn in a fire storm.
- ModakBoard insulation properties help protect internal furnishing from flash burning from high external temperatures
- ModakBoard will not ignite from ember attacks. Ember attack is the largest single national contributor to home loss.
- ModakBoard is 10 times stronger than normal plasterboard products and insulates from intense heat and cold.

Protecting your home from ember attack
Ember attack fires often start due to a build up of leaves and debris in gutters. The host embers slide down the roof into the gutters, ignite the debris, get lodged in the timber eaves and sometimes enter the internal roof and under floor areas. They can also ignite the debris under homes and result in internal combustion due to the timber joists and wooden flooring. Modak homes are designed to protect your home from ember attacks. The Modak Leafless Gutter system is a closed gutter system ensuring that no debris can collect in the gutters. If an ember does get into your gutter, there is nothing to burn. The external linings of your home is fire resistant ModakBoard and framing and roof frame is steel.

Locking out a fire storm
Modak Fire Shutters are recommended as an addition to any house in bush fire prone areas. The shutters are steel framed with ModakBoard slats and come in door shutter style or as adjustable louvers. Coupled with the double glazed windows, your windowed areas are protected from Fire Storms.
